Stair nose is too tall?

We installed laminate wood flooring to our upstairs hallway, our stairs are still carpet. When we tried to install the new stair nose it's too tall for the flooring. I'm worried about leaving it that way and causing people to trip. Any advice on what to do?

Hi sfitzpatrick,

First make sure the stair nose you have is for laminate flooring, matching stair nose is available from the flooring manufacturer.

If you are using the appropriate stair nose and it still does not fit flush, check to see if the carpet is interfering with the installation, if so, cut back the carpet and or the padding accordingly.

If the fit is still a problem, you will have to sand, plane or cut the back side of the nose to reduce its profile too assure a proper fit.
