Hey Bcains.

Where as the 2 things are not related, there are solutions for both.

The mushrooms are coming up from excessive moisture. Typically 2 or 3 days of nonstop rain will have the mushrooms pop up over night. Fertile soil is also another factor as well as the breaking down of organic matter like buried wood or mulch. Low light is also a factor and days are getting shorter and overcast rainy days also help them pop up. Because these mushrooms are covered in spores, removing them from the yard and putting them in a plastic bag would be a good option to prevent them from spreading. Mushrooms will not hurt the yard however.

The Home Depot does sell many different animal repellents in store and online to repel cats.
