Summer to Fall: Colorful Transition Flowers

It is a shock to customers that are arriving back into town after a long vacation that their plants…some of their plants are dead. Even if they had someone to water them….the plants look terrible, the flowers are sad and tired and some need to be replaced

It is even more shocking to customers when they come into the garden department looking for summer flowers and they see that the mums are in. “What…what, it’s not time for mums”, the reality is yes…. yes it is!

Surrendering to the end of summer is such a difficult prospect, folding up your bathing suit and throwing in your beach towel is just not expectable…yet!

Yesterday a lovely mom, and her daughter came in to the garden department in search of bright, summer colored flowers, the mom was not willing to even look at the beautiful pink mums, “no, they don’t make me happy” she said

We shopped together until we found the perfect seasonal transition flowers!

Echinacea: Cone Flower- Pow Wow, this is a beautiful mid to late summer-fall flowering perennial. The color is bold, deep pink. The petals of the flowers start pale and develop into an intense fuchsia. The cone, seed head, it a rich deep rusty-orange color, and it is just beautiful and durable! Pow Wow loves the sun, and is drought tolerant.

Sedum: Stone Crop-Ruby Glow, this broccoli floret-like plant is absolutely gorgeous. The beautiful deep pink glow of the sedums florets compliment all that it is planted with; it is a reliable, sun loving, late summer bloomer, it is also drought tolerant.

Vinca: a strong summer annual, was still flowering in all its beautiful, summertime glory in hanging baskets. Vinca the flower can take a while to become established. Plant them in the spring and by summers end and into the fall they really shine, they will last until a true frost.

The lovely mom and daughter filled their cart, and I carried a few plants they chose to their car, the mom said "thank you for having just what we needed....summer color".

Stop by your local Home Depot find some seasonal transition flowers, and fill the holes in your garden and window boxes, with flowers that say “summer is not over”!!

Enjoy the glorious days of summers end,    Maureen

Thank you for the fantastic suggestions!  It is a difficult time of year for us gardeners...saying good bye to our beautiful blooms that we cautiously cared for during a very sunny, dry summer.  If we can stretch them for a little longer and blend in with our fall decorations it will make this change of seasons so much more bearable!
