Trending in the Aisles: Bug Light Bulbs

Days are getting longer, and while it's getting colder in many parts of the country, the nuisance of flying bugs, moths, gnats 'greeting'  you at the entry door can still happen.

Other than using one of these guys near your exterior door below, using yellow-based light bulbs are one of the best options to get rid of the bugs away.

In this post, I'll give you a few options that you may or may not know about for bug lights. As with any light bulb you ever purchase, remember that going for more energy efficient technology versions in LED and CFL last longer and save money for you in the long run.

Remember that a true yellow color light bulb will work, and not just a low Kelvin temperature like soft white will be the best thing to keep those bugs away from your door.

But before we get started...why use yellow light bulbs? It's mainly due to most species of flying insects can't see or barely perceive the color of yellow. That's why you'll see yellow-ish lighting in some street lights, as an example.

With proper planning, you can still set up white lights around the vicinity of the bug lights. This is important when and if you have an exterior social gathering. Place the yellow-based light bulbs around the highest activity, and then white lights no closer than 10-15 feet near that.

The bugs will be drawn to the farther distance white lights, and not you or your guests.

Feit Electric 60W Equivalent A19 Yellow LED Bug Light Bulb

Let's begin with the best bug light we currently sell. This version by Feit gives you enough light to see your keys and the pizza delivery guy or gal from inside your home, and it lasts the longest versus any other version we carry.

The Philips LED version of this is just as effective in brightness, but only lasts 10,000 hours.

Compared to other bulbs, this will outlast any others and has a 25,000 hour life..compare that with the 2,000 hours of the next product...

As stated earlier, this has a short lifespan versus the LED version previously mentioned. However, it has the best price and quantity, since you get 2 in the packaging. And unlike the other versions, it can be fully dimmed if needed.

The final yellow color light bulb I'd like to discuss is one of your exterior security flood lights. Use these on those fixtures that will still cast a lot of light, but keep the area in and around the illuminated area as bug free as possible.

Remember that lighting that is yellow in color cannot guarantee to get rid of every single flying insect around the fixture, but it certainly can reduce the amount of them outside your home in that area.

Let us know if you have any further questions regarding lighting for inside or outside of your home or business.
