Trending in the Aisles: Power Inverters

If you are someone like me, you are always on the go. And lots of time, you don't have time to plug in your devices while traveling or commuting. One of the best solutions for charging up your laptop, tablet, or phone is a good power inverter during your time in the car. As you may or may not know, this device converts your car's DC 12 volt power to AC 120 volt 15 amps. They come with that household plug-in and some have USB ports so you can easily charge up what you need from the convenience of your vehicle.

The smaller varieties are  usually plugged into the vehicle via the cigarette lighter to provide power. However, some larger types can be installed via the car battery, which makes them great for tailgating (shown below).

All power inverters are rated by the amount of watts that they can charge. Most smaller power inverters are at or around 100 watts. These are the smallest types and are the types that plug into the vehicle's cigarette lighter.

A good example is the RIDGID 100 Watt Power Inverter. It's shown below and works well for easy charging.

This inverter makes it a perfect choice for everyday, small device charging. It has the following features you'll want to look for when shopping for a power inverter.

  • durable outer construction
  • fan cooled design so it can work longer without overheating
  • illuminated power controls so you can see where to plug in darkness
  • fuse protected from power overage

On the flip side of this type, there's also the much higher 1000 watt power inverters. While you can use these for charging your phone, these work very effectively for job sites, like the image shows below.

For anytime you need to charge power tools or lots of devices (more than 2), consider purchasing a power inverter with at least 500 watts. As said earlier, most larger versions can be powered via the batter cable of your car. So for tailgating or outdoor events, this makes it great to give power to the an example. As with any portable charging, you must know its limitations to it as well as what is being plugged into it.

Overtaxing any power inverter with an incorrect device can cause damage to the vehicle as well as injury to you, so be sure to read the manual for your inverter before use.
