Trending the Aisles: Amazon Echo

The Home Depot in the past year has made it easy to make your home smart from products ranging to thermostats to security systems.

Now available in our stores is the one item for work or play that can make it easier for everyday life; the Amazon Echo

You may have seen it on commercials and in the aisle at your local Home Depot store

So what makes it so unique and possibly the most indispensable new home automation device for you? Well, for starters, don't treat it as face value...it's more than just a wireless speaker and voice command device.

Think of it as a personal assistant, ready to do commands or ask a question simply by speaking to it. That's right, since it's learns your voice (even while music is concurrently playing) and acts as the remote control for the Echo, it makes it ideal for getting information or listening to music on the go.

The 'wake word' for the unit is Alexa, which gradually learns your voice commands over time.

Here's a small sample of what services the Amazon Echo provides:

  • Offers weather & news from a variety of sources, including local radio stations & NPR
  • It can be linked in with existing wi-fi smart home products Home Depot already sells, like Nest Thermostats, Wink app, Philips Hue, and WeMo
  • Create and add to a shopping list
  • For music, Echo works with Amazon Music as well as Spotify, Pandora, and streaming services like Apple Music or Google Play from your smart device.
  • Set an alarm
  • Ask for traffic conditions
  • Works with your Google Calendar
  • Control several smart devices at once
  • Order a pizza
  • If in your area, get an Uber ride
  • and just about any question regarding the universe you may have!

As you can see, the list is pretty limitless for what you can do with your Amazon Echo.

Since "Alexa" (the name you say when speaking to the unit) is built in with a skills kit, the user gives skills to the program so as to make "her" function easier.

Best of all, since this learns, it's software updates are constant. You can have real time updated sports scores without it having to run on the device as a good example.

The Amazon Echo runs on cloud based processing and at minimum, you'll need Wi-Fi internet for it to operate.

With it's small size but large speakers, you'll be able to have this handy item in just about anywhere in your home or office.

While there are many other features such as hardware associated with it, having this is a must for organizing a busy work day or just relaxing with friends listening to great music.

All from your own voice!
