Turning on switch trips breaker

Yesterday evening a curcuit in the hous tripped.  After some experimentation I found out if I leave the switch to my master bedroom off, the circuit does not trip, but the fan works.  If I flip the switch, the circuit trips.  So I replaced the switch, but the problem remains.  It is a single pole switch.

Hey JayParis,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

It sounds like you have a case of miswiring somewhere in your circuit. Since you have already replaced the single pole switch, double check the connections as well as the ceiling fan in its junction box.

You'll need to check all connections throughout the circuit that is feeding it, as well as all connections to it inside the main breaker panel. Of course, work safely with the power off.

If this still doesn't work, the problem could be at the breaker itself or unseen wiring and/or connections on the circuit. Check all connections, and this should solve the problem for you.

Let us know if you have any further questions,

Joseph
