Turning staircase into storage

I live in a tri-level house and I would like to put hinges at the top of my lower set of stairs so I can lift them up for underneath storage, are there hinges made just for this purpose

Greetings and welcome to our community,

My name is Tom, and I have built out quite a few basements and have utilized the areas under stairs for additional storage in almost every renovation done.

Everyone had a different budget, and configurations vary so I have done everything from hanging fabric on a tension rod to one of the applications shown at the link below (which has quite a few great ideas for your project);

While I am not familiar with a particular hinge designed for a horizontal application placed at the top of a door for storage, a treasure chest styled semi circular hinge that locks comes to mind. I would ask why use the top for the hinge point? It would seem that any other option would be preferable as the weight of the door would be an issue, as well as the space taken up by the door opening in that manner.

Check out the site above, I am certain you will find a great idea for your situation. A few others follow that may be of interest as well.

Hope that helps and again welcome to our community!

Hello Mathews19k,

I was just wondering if you had figured out your hinge issue.

I have a couple of questions to see if I could help you with it along with the help of HD116 previous post.

Are you trying to have access to under the stair treads or are you trying to have an access panel at the bottom landing? If it’s the stair treads that you are wanting to have as your access point then you can get a flush mount spring hinge that opens up to 100 degree angle and are self closing so they would keep it closed tight when they are not open. Here is a link so you can see the specs for one of them that we carry. (Click here) There are many different style hinges that would work for this situation it just depends on your stairs construction.

If the treads go under the risers (most do) then you would have to rip (cut) the tread so that you would have a piece of the tread that stays under the riser approximately 2“-3” and the rest would be able to be lifted for access to the storage. I hope this along with HD116's post has helped you figure out how to get more storage out of your stairs.
