Paint

Type of stain to use for a 1 year old wood fence.Never been painted or primed but tagged by vandals

I want to pick a wood stain or paint that has very long lasting weatherproofing for weather NY area. Wood fence is 6ft. high. Was installed 1 year ago . Was told by Home Depot paint department last year to wait 1 year to stain or paint because the cross supports and posts are pressure treated  and fence panels are cedar. Also this fence was tagged by gang vandals last night 5/22/13 with green spray paint in middle of front road facing section. So need something that will cover the gang signature.

Generally speaking the more opaque the stain, the longer it will last and the more protection it will afford.  So a solid stain will last longer than a semi-transparent, which will last longer than a transparent.  Obviously the more opaque the stain, the less of the wood you will see behind it.  If you think that graffiti will continue to be a problem, then an opaque stain or paint will be required to cover adequately.

Consumer Reports reviews paints and stains on a regular basis.  Behr Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain (available from the Home Depot, $29) has done very well.

Hello donmum2103!

Gotta love Adam's suggestion!

Solid color stain from Behr comes in a ten-year product that is self-priming on wood.

Remove the graffiti completely with spray-on graffiti remover or sand the wood is smooth, you might sand with 100-grit paper.

But, be certain to completely remove the graffiti because stains are penetrating sealers that must absorb into the wood to do their job ... last!

One other thing!

After removing the graffiti, but before staining, use a fence wash to kill and clean mildew. Fresh water rinse and dry.

Then spray, brush, or roll two coats of stain for a long-lasting finish.
