Hi Reycm806,

To strip the varnish off your fiberglass door, first remove it and lay it on sawhorses.

Remove all of the hardware including hinges and the handle.

Next, divide the door face into several sections and strip one section at a time. You do not want the stripper to remain on the door surface any longer than necessary to remove the paint.

Methylene chloride based strippers work well but can damage the surface if left on the door too long.

You may also try a safer more environmentally friendly stripper such as Ready-Strip, which does not contain methylene chloride.

Use an old paint brush to apply the stripper, allow it to sit until the paint begins to bubble up and soften then scrape off as much as possible.

Wipe off the remaining stripper and check the surface for any remaining varnish. Apply a second coat if necessary.

Clean the surface with denatured alcohol to remove any stripper residue.

If the surface is textured, use a scouring pad soaked with denatured alcohol to remove any remaining varnish.

Finally use a clean rag soaked in the denatured alcohol to clean the entire surface and allow it to dry before refinishing it.
