Vinyl Click Lock Flooring What goes under?

We are going to be installing VINYL CLICK LOCK flooring not LAMINATE. We need to know what to put under it. It is going on a CONCRETE floor. We asked in store and they said all you need is the plastic sheeting for moisture barrier. To me that sounds like there wont be any cushion whatsoever. Is it possible to put the white foam under it to give the floor a little give to it or is that not possible? Doing research online and I am getting mixed reviews. I try searching for Vinyl and it brings up a lot of laminate Please help.
Thanks,
Jordan

Hi Jordan,

The first step is to choose the flooring you want, search "Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring" for the floor you are looking for. We sell Traffic Master, Home Decorators Collection, Allure and Lifeproof vinyl plank flooring. Each is at a specific price point based on your budget and decor. Some are manufactured with the underlayment attached, others may require a separate underlayment or vapor barrier depending upon the subfloor.

Once you have chosen the flooring you want, review the installation instructions for that specific flooring. The instructions will specify what underlayment if any is required and how the flooring should be installed.

You do not want cushion. The flex that any cushioning would provide would end up breaking your joints between planks. There are underlayments available that can be used under LVP/LVT that will improve sound quality/transmission. Think STC and IIC ratings. STC is the sound of people talking in a room. IIC is footfall. The higher the number the better. As a guideline, 1/4" cork on a 8" slab is around STC 60 and IIC 58 with a tile floor. Wood floors will push the numbers higher due to their own sound deadening properties. On a ground floor, utilizing the proper underlayment for LVP/LVT will improve the sound of the floor as you walk on it.

± IIC-STC 70  Virtually Sound Proof

  IIC-STC 60   Superior Sound Proofing

  IIC-STC 50   International Building Code

IIC-STC 40  Sound Proofing below most codes

FloorMuffler LVT is the primary one you will find on homedepot.com.

Underlayments used for laminate floors will void your warranty. Products like LifeProof LVT/LVP have a built in underlayment.
