I would like to replace a 4x4 wood post that previously attached to a deck railing and the roof of my porch. It was about 7.5 feet tall attach to concrete. I would like to use a Vinyl Post Jacket, Model # 73012479 with a 4x4 preessure treated wood insert. How do I secure the 4x4 wood insert to the concrete with the vinyl post jacket installed? What solution would be best to secure the wood post to the concrete? Do I need to look at a vinyl wrap solution? This way I can install the 4x4 pressure treated post insert first and than wrap it with vinyl? This would be the more expensive route and I was hoping there's a better way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There are several ways to secure the 4x4 base to the concrete. The most common method is by using a Standoff Post Base that is secured to the concrete and then to the 4x4 post.
You will have to drill a pilot hole into the cement and use a special nail to secure the brace. The brace will also allow for the post to be slightly lifted up off the surface for moisture protection.
The trick is making sure that the "jacket" has enough clearing on the top to be able to attach the screws to the 4x4 post. I recommend adding a 1x4 trim piece either at the top or bottom after installation to conceal the space.
I was looking at the exact Standoff Post Base this weekend. What special nail is used to secure it to the cement? I'm having trouble determining this. Is it this concrete Wedge Anchor or something else? I also looked at the Retrofit Bolt. Which is correct?
The 1x4 trim piece your recommending would take the place of a normal trim piece such as this, Trim ?
Thanks in advance for your help!
I am partial to the TAPCON anchors. Just drill a pilot hole and screw then in with an electric screw gun.
ok. Thought I would need something stronger.
....and for the 1x4 trim piece your recommending would take the place of a normal trim piece such as this, Trim ?
The weight of the 4x4 and the bulk of the attachment being at the top will be fine.
I hope this quick illustration helps.:smileyhappy:
ok yes, we're talking about the same trim piece. Thanks for your help.
