We have a non functioning attic fan, with a switch in the hallway. Can I replace with a whole house fan?

We live in Northbrook, IL. We would like to add 1 or 2 whole house fans. There is an existing switch in the hallway to a old attic fan that is not working. We would like to remove the attic fan and use its circuit to wire 1 or 2 whole house attic fans. From an electrical standpoint can this be done? Any recommendations on types of whole house fans or installers in our area? What should we expect for installation cost?

Obviously we can't say with certainty but it's likely you could use the existing switch to control an attic fan (or perhaps two).  A lot of it depends on what else is on that circuit.  Figure something around 5 amps for each motor.

I don't know if Home Depot installs attic fans but you could certainly ask.  Beyond that get estimates from a couple of local contractors.
