What In The World Is A BACKSAW?

In the world of saws, there are many varieties, power saws and handsaws, miter saws and radial arm saws. A Backsaw is a specialized handsaw for making precise cuts in wood and is often used to cut molding. It is used free hand or with a hand held miter box.

It is called a backsaw due to the blade stiffener on the back of the blade opposite the cutting edge. This stiffener keeps the blade straight and prevents blade flexing. If the blade flexes during a cut the cut will not be true, and the blade will bind and slow the cutting process.

There are a number of backsaws; each for a specific purpose, the most common version has a 12-14 inch blade and a D shaped handle. Others have a straight or oval shaped handle.

The next time you visit the molding aisle at your local Home Depot check out the saws on the cutting tables, they are backsaws, grab a piece of scrap molding and give it a try.

Hey there Answer Man,

Backsaw...I had never even heard the term, that is so interesting!!!

I use my hand held miter box and backsaw all the time, and never knew the name.

Keep those "What in the World" coming, I am learning a lot, more knowledge to pass on to our customers!

Thanks Mike,
