What In The World Is PEX?

Last time, we looked at Sharkbite plumbing fittings and I mentioned they work with PEX tubing, so what is PEX tubing? PEX tubing is plastic pipe made of cross-linked polyethylene.

PEX is flexible and easier to install than rigid pipe, and it offers high heat-resistance and long-term durability. PEX comes in sizes from 1/4 inch to 4 inches in diameter. The most commonly used sizes for water supply piping are 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch.

PEX Tubing and Fittings

Due to its flexibility, Pex is ideal for residential plumbing applications where copper pipe would require numerous fittings to install a pipe run, PEX can simply bend to make turns around corners and runs down from the attic to kitchen and bath fixtures. This allows pipe runs with many fewer fittings and joints, which helps minimize potential leaks.

Pex is color coded, red for hot water and blue for cold making pipe runs much easier to install and maintain. Pex is approved for use in most states and has become the piping of choice for many plumbers. Pex is also available in white, which is often used to make connection collars.

The next time you visit your local Home Depot, stop by the plumbing department and check out the PEX tubing.
