What In The World Is TREX?

Trex is a composite wood product made from recycled wood fiber and plastic film. The manufacturer uses recycled plastic film from a variety of sources ranging from the overwrap on paper towels to dry cleaner bags, sandwich bags, newspaper sleeves, and grocery and shopping bags. The average 500-square foot composite Trex deck contains 140,000 recycled plastic bags! That makes Trex one of the largest plastic bag recyclers in the U.S.

Trex is manufactured by combining the recycled ground wood fiber with plastic pellets made from the recycled plastic film. This combination is mixed and heated to produce a soft pliable almost putty like substance which is then pressed through molds to produce the Trex planks. Once the planks have cooled, they are cut to length and palletized for shipment.

Trex is waterproof, will not rot, split or fad and the only maintenance needed is an occasional wash with soap and water. It can be cut and installed with traditional power tools and fasteners. It truly is an amazing product made from 100 %-recycled materials and available in a variety of colors.

The next time you are in the lumber department take a look at the Trex planks, they are the future of high quality recycled building materials.
