Paint

What is the best way to get old spray paint of a patio set?

I have my Mothers old patio set that has old coats of spray paint on it. The paint is flaking, cracking and you can see some rust. What is the best way to get all this off without damaging it?

The patio set is metal, and around 40 years old.

Hello Alice!

Use a series of increasing number sandpapers, starting with 150-grit to remove the rust and flake.

220-grit is for smoothing, but a wet-sand 300-grit regularly dipped in a bucket of fresh water will also smooth without damaging the surface.

Use your hand to "feel" for imperfections.

When satisfied that your surfaces are smooth, prime and then spray the color and texture of your choice from the Rust-Oleum selection.

Clear coat can be added last to provide a scratch-resistant finished coat in the sheen of your choice (matte, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss).
