Howdy Elm31881,

It definitely looks like you have an invasion of “Japanese Honeysuckle” (Lonicera Japonica).

Smaller patches of Japanese honeysuckle can often be controlled by simply hand pulling the weeds. For the large portions simply lift the vines with a rake and cut off the exposed stems weakens the honeysuckle plants. Get rid and discard all cuttings and debris to prevent the Japanese honeysuckle from taking root and starting a new infestation.

I recommend using a weed killer like Bayer All-in-One Lawn-Weed and Crabgrass Killer. The key to eradicating this menace is repeated applications.  I have also had some good results with Roundup too. This is a systemic herbicide that kills Japanese honeysuckle by moving throughout the plant and down to the roots, where it prevents the production of specific proteins the vine needs to grow. You can spray Japanese honeysuckle anytime from spring through autumn for best results.

Tip: never overuse the product thinking it will work better; you would only be wasting the chemical and could kill nearby vegetation that you want to keep.

Happy Gardening,
