bath tub trip lever

I want to fix the trip lever stopper in the bathroom tub but it looks different from others in pictures and videos. It's a metal chain that goes inside a metal tube. I can't pull it out,t he tube is too long. The stopper never works, there's also no adjust-ability. How do I fix it?

Hello jmwman.  Welcome to the Community!

Trip lever tub drains are the most convenient and least reliable way to operate a tub stopper.  I have not seen one with a chain before, but it must operate a plunger in the down tube, as it would take linkage or a cable to travel to a drain stopper.  Like rope, chain does not push well, so a plunger that relies on gravity seems to be what you have.  Over time, these will stick in the open position.  They are designed to be removable from the top where the lever is for cleaning.  If you can't get it out, then simply replace the drain assembly at the tub bottom with a direct twist or step on/off style.
