building a window header

what size fo lumber is needed to build a window header for a 10 feet long window

You're talking about a clear span of 10'?  That's a huge distance and I would strongly recommend consulting a professional engineer to do the calculations, they're complicated and something you shouldn't be doing yourself.  I'd suspect you'd be beyond conventional framing lumber, most likely would need to use engineered lumber or steel.

You also need to consider is their a 2nd story above this  "10' window header" that has load bearing walls or ceiling/roof rafters that this 10' window header has to support as well? This is very important to consider as well.. Greg Kapitan http://texashomeexteriors.net/
