can i wire 12-2 wire to a 15 amp breaker

Hello barbarabratton.  Welcome to the Community!

 

The short answer is yes.

 

Circuit breakers protect the wires from overheating by limiting the amount of current allowed to pass through them.  For 12 gauge wire, 20 amps can safely be handled.  So any size circuit breaker of 20 amps or less will be OK.  Here is a chart from a homedepot.com buying guide on wiring:

It is actually not uncommon to use a larger size wire than specified, especially on long runs.  This is due to  the fact that the larger wire will reduce voltage less at the load then a smaller wire will.
