complete fireplace removal

How would one go about completely removing a fireplace and closing up the wall.  This fireplace overpowers the room and decreases the functionality of the room.

Hi spilab,

Answer to this question it is going to vary based on the type of the construction and the location of the fireplace.

For instance, fireplace that is positioned up against the exterior wall is probably going to be easier to remove that the one that is centrally located in between two rooms.

For the one positioned along the exterior wall steps would probably only include demo and proper chimney termination.

A fireplace that is centrally positioned within a room can also be a bearing point for ceiling and floor joists.

But before we get into details …

Would you be able to post a picture of the fireplace and give us some more info?

Do you have any appliances; such are furnaces and water heaters, exhausting in to the same chimney?

Also ,do you have accesses to the space above the fireplace?
