deck baluster

what should I use to replace old deck balusters.  will 2", 18 gauge nail gun be strong enough, larger nails, deck screws?  I want to avoid them working their way out over time, but don't want this to be too long a project.  Is there a deck nail thin enough to use without predrilling

18 ga. brads would not offer sufficient strength.  Assuming this is pressure treated wood, you'll want to use a screw rated for contact with pressure treated wood.  I'd use "deck screws" and probably pre-drill the baluster first to avoid any splitting.  Pre-drilling holes isn't going to add that much time to your project, especially if you happen to have a second drill or could borrow one.  Spending a little more time to do it correctly the first time is going to save you work down the road.
