what is the best drill bit material for drilling through a car frame? (for installing a receiver hitch)

Hi Ericww,

 

You want a cobalt bit, as it's a type of high-speed steel (HSS) that has more cobalt in it and is strong enough to cut through hardened steel. 

 

The Rigid drill bits we sell at The Home Depot are cobalt bits and will cut through the tough steel of a car frame.

 

Be sure to use a cutting fluid or light duty oil to lubricate and cool the bit while you are drilling.

 

This keeps the bit from overheating and becoming dull and caries away the shavings as the bit is cutting through the steel.
