It starts outside your home.  The property should be graded so that water is runs away from the house.  Gutters and downspouts should be appropriately sized, installing correctly, and functioning property so that, again, water is carried away from the house.  Sometimes that means standing in a heavy rain to see that everything is working as it should.

Hi there brdh40,

I’m Jen, from The Home Depot.

Welcome to the community!

Adam444 has great ideas and suggestions.  I would just like to add that you can seal your basement on the inside as well.  I had the same problem and I sealed it a year ago and so far, no water. The process was quick and easy, it goes on just like paint.  If you do choose to seal the basement, then you may want to invest in a dehumidifier as well to keep the moisture down.

This is what I used. Behr Basement and Masonry Waterproofer.  DRYLOK will also do the job.

Good luck!
