how can I change a 220 plug on a dryer to a 120

You CAN NOT simply change the receptacle.  A typical electric dryer will need a 3-wire (plus ground) 120/240v, 30 amp circuit.  That will require at least 10 gauge wire.  But you should always check the manufacturer's specification and follow whatever they call for.
