Hey 5050.

Every house has underground waterlines. In different parts of the United States, there are different frost lines. The frost line is simply, how deep the ground freezes in your area. The further north you go, the deeper the frost lines get. The key is to find out what the frost line is in your area and to bury your pipe below it.

18 to 24 inches is typically a good rule of thumb when burying pipes but be sure to check with local building codes in your area to be sure. If your pipes are in an uninsulated crawl space or in a unheated barn, exposed to the elements then further action will be needed. Here are a few items that can help keep these exposed pipes insulated.

30 ft. Automatic Electric Heat Cable Kit

Foam and Foil Pipe Wrap Insulation Tape

  Hard Faucet Cover

  Tubular Foam Pipe Insulation
