Hi chafu,

A compost bin can be made of many different materials. Mine is not a structure at all, it’s simply a pile to which I add my yard waste and select kitchen scraps.

The best way to speed up the composting process is to turn the compost. Turning the composting materials exposes more matter to the enzymes so that they can decompose that matter more quickly. Composting will occur if you don’t turn it, but it will take longer.

Compost bins are available in many forms and can be customized to fit your individual needs. We have manufactured composters available on HomeDepot.com as well as in the stores. Click here to shop.

Gregg, from our Community posted How to Build a COMPOST BIN using wood and screws to customize a bin for your particular requirements.

Jen, in Boston expounded on your composting possibilities. Here is Jen’s post: http://community.homedepot.com/t5/Outdoors/How-to-make-homemade-compost/m-p/49263#M4460

Chris in Atlanta created this video for The Home Depot’s Garden Club about composting:

Let us know what you come up with and how well it works for you.

Thanks for the question and Welcome to The Community!!!
