Drapes & Curtains

When measuring for drapes keep in mind that width number is always first ahead of length number.

Curtains 101:

  • You will first have to decide where you are going to mount the curtain rod/pole.  Rod location should be exactly on the window frame or extending over, and either at the exact height of the window or higher above.
  • Measure the width either from an outside mount or an inside mount (of the frame).
  •  Curtains and drapes should be at least 3 times the width of the window to give it fullness.
  • The length should be either to the top of the window sill, just below the window sill, midway to the floor, or all the way to the floor.
  • Common lengths are from 63, 84, and 95 - 120 inches (depending on the desired effect)
  • Keep in mind that the length of the curtain is determined by measuring from the inside top of the rod pocket to the bottom.

We have a great blog with Martha Stewart that addresses all these details here:  Choosing Curtains
