Hi, will the new AC unit fit into the opening if you slide the window open?  IF not, you should be able to remove the sliding window by lifting up, then out.  This will give you a little more room to fit the AC unit.  IF you will be removing seasonally, like remove in the fall/winter, then reinstall the window every season.  To fill in the gap above the AC unit in the summer, you can use a simple solution like 2inch thick insulating foam board cut to snug fit, then paint with complimentary colored latex paint.  The AC unit should have brackets that support its weight against your house.  These simply hang on the window sill on the outside of the house to support the unit.  Make sure the unit back end tilts downward slightly so any rainwater and condensate drain water leaves the AC unit and drains OUTSIDE and not back into your home. The left/right gaps should be filled in by the AC units 'accordian' style door/fillers.
