I pulled carpet out of a bedroom. I want to stain the concrete underneath but the floor is covered in paint and drywall from construction.

Howdy Steve154587,

Concrete stain will adhere to any form of concrete as long as the pores are open and ready to receive the stain. This is achieved via the cleaning and etching stage prior to any staining. A concrete etching solution is the best way to prepare the surface, but needs to be applied with caution.

The biggest concern I would have in your situation is that there may be some glue residue left over from the previous carpet installation.  If this is the case, then you may consider just painting the floor with epoxy floor paint. Of course – floor prep is still the biggest step before painting the surface.  Try removing as much of the glue as possible with a scraper and then clean & etch the surface.

Happy staining,

Coach Dave
