Hi bellcountrygirl,

Thank you for your question and welcome to our community.

Here are some simple steps to follow to help you with your project:

  1. Make sure that you have a solid base to tile over like a cement board
  2. Measure length and width ( Length X Width = Floor area)
  3. Find the center line of the room & mark it with chalk tape for regular areas
  4. Once you determine that size of the area, you will want to know the size of the tile you will be using.  Now that you know the size of your tile you can calculate how much tile you will need to finish your project. How to calculate tile
  5. When buying tile you will need to have at least 10% more than what you calculate.  If this is your first time setting tile you will want to get 20% more than you initially calculate to cover any mistakes you might make.
  6. Pre-set your tile to determine your pattern and any cuts that you may need to make.  Be sure to use your spacers when pre-setting your tile to get the correct spacing.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

How to lay floor tile

Hello bellcountrygirl and thank you for joining The Community!  We are glad that you are here.

You will need to first calculate the square footage of your room (length times width).  Then add 10% extra for cuts and future repairs.  (Add 15-20% overage if you will be installing a diagonal pattern.)

For example:

room layout.jpg

This room is 12 feet by 15 feet = 12 x 15 = 180 square feet

10% overage = 180 x 1.1 = 198 square feet needed in total

If there are 45 tiles in each case (this differs between styles and manufacturers):
198 tiles / 45 tiles per case = 4.4 cases

You should plan to purchase 5 cases of tiles.

Be sure that you purchase all tiles from the same batch (the batch number is located on the end of the packaging).  Allow the tiles to acclimate to the room for 48 hours or as directed by the manufacturer.  Make sure the room temperature is between 65-85 degrees so the adhesive will properly adhere.

If you are installing the peel-and-stick tiles, check out the Installing Self-Stick Vinyl Tiles Project Guide for installation information.

Best wishes on your project.
