Hello fmojica5.  Welcome to the Community!

 

The motor size needed can vary somewhat based on the type and size of garage door you have.

For most garage doors, including double wide 16' steel doors, a 1/2 horsepower opener will work just fine.

Only if you have a door wider, or heavy due to wood construction would you need to use a 3/4 horsepower unit.

 

Need and want are often two different things though.  You may find that a 3/4 Hp unit also has features that appeal to you.  In addition, the extra motor capacity can increase the unit's service life.
