Hi Steve.

Thank you for your great question.

For a new lawn, you would need to water several times a day, enough to keep the soil looking damp.  Do not water in the evening though.  This could create a fungus that will damage your grass.

Regular grass fertilizer should never be used with new grass seed.  It has too high of a nitrogen content which will most likely burn the new seedling.  Scotts does make a Starter Fertilizer which can be added as the last step when using new seed on your lawn.

Scotts 3.34 lb. 1,000 sq. ft. Turf Builder Starter Brand Fertilizer

The seed should be covered with about 1/8 to 1/4 inch of Scotts Lawn Soil or Kelloggs Topper which will help to keep the seed damp and deter the birds from ravishing your newly planted grass seed.

Scotts Turf Builder 1.5 cu. ft. Lawn Soil                         Kellogg Garden Organics 2 cu. ft. Topper Lawn Soil for Seed and Sod

If you used a starter fertilizer then your new grass seed should be sprouting in about 7-10 days providing you have been diligent about keeping the soil damp.  If you used a regular Scotts Lawn Fertilizer along with your new grass seed, it would just burn the new seedling that just sprouted.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
