Hello imru2prw and welcome to the Community.

Framing for an entry door is a question that I have seen before.   I would like to direct you to a link that Christine _HD_OC has posted for installing an exterior door.   Her reference is not new construction but it will show the proper way to support your doorway.  I want to add a site that will show how to install an entry door.

Since you want to know how to frame up for a new doorway that will be 36”wide, I am assuming you will be using a standard 80” tall door, if so your rough opening will be 38 ½”x 82 ½”. This will give you enough room to shim and square your installation.  Here is a link to a prehung exterior door with all its specifications.

Thanks for your question and I would like to see a post of your final project.
