Any paint can be lightened to some extent, the question is how to do it. If the paint is a very dark gray mixed from a "deep base" paint, merely adding additional white tint will lighten it somewhat. However, white tint is NOT white paint. At some point, too much white tint will corrupt the integrity of the paint. The safest way to significantly lighten a dark color is to start adding white paint until the desired lightness has been reached.

There is no formula for how quickly such a change will happen. You just have to experiment a bit. You may want to pour off a couple gallons to see how fast additional white will facilitate a change.  If you start diluting several gallons of gray, you might end up with an ungodly amount of paint. befopre the desired lightness is reached.  Also, it is a good idea to keep tract of what the ratio of white to the color was so that that color may be reproduced in the future.

Hope this has helped.
