Welcome to our community Mac87!

Thank you for your question!

If you want a smooth surface, you will want to fill in the grooves with wood filler before you do anything else. If you would like to keep the grooves, you don't have to do this step.

Then, scuff sand the surface with medium grit sandpaper. This will prep the surface so that the primer will adhere to the surface. Clean the surface with a damp rag before proceeding.

Next, prime the surface. Personally, I would recommend using an oil based primer because I think it adheres better to paneling. But, you can use a high quality latex based primer, such as Glidden Gripper if you would like. :)

After you prime the surface, you can paint it with the wall paint of your choosing.
