how to remove hairspray residue from a painted wall

Hello,

Any tips on how to remove built up hairspray on an interior painted (flat/bright color) wall?

Thank you.

Hello MaggieC!

Almost every simple solution I've heard discussed includes one-part cleaner and two-part water ... apply, allow to soak, wipe, and apply again if the surface remains sticky.

I've heard of using fabric softener, shampoo, and other household cleaners like TSP.

If the mild cleaners don't work, try Krud Kutter and then Denatured Alcohol.

Either of these may also remove paint, so be prepared to touch-up.

FINALLY:

More aggressive cleaners like Acetone will almost certainly remove hairspray residue, but will almost certainly damage your paint as well.

Do not use mineral spirits. This aggressive solvent will leave an oily residue that may embed into your wallboard and require priming with an oil-based primer before re-painting.
