how to tell what my designed wall is made of - rock, pumice, something fake

I have a New England raised ranch built in 1973.  The original home owner (I'm the 3rd one by now), hired a contractor in one of the years between 1973 - 1977 to finish off the basement.  The basement has a column and a half wall done with portland cement and some sort of rocky like material done in a beige stone color.  The upstairs back door from the kitchenette/dining room area has the same material surrounding the door.  I am in the process of gutting the home and I was wondering if anyone knew what this material could be from back in that time frame.  If it's good quality I would keep it, but if it is really cheap/fake I am thinking of placing wood paneling up from my leftover solid wood floor planks.  Any other advice is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.
