Hey ttwinma,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community!

If I am understanding you correctly, you'll need to place a pencil trim in between the countertop and backsplash. It actually would look just as good to place quarter round directly in front of it instead of installing pencil trim.

The reason why is that you'll have to carefully take out the existing backsplash with a hand-held tile wet saw. These kinds of saws can cut through the marble, but it will have to be done carefully so as not to damage or overcut the tiles.

In terms of time and money, it would be easier to use a quarter round or rounded edge of the marble instead of the rougher-edge of a pencil trim.

Shop to see what you can find, and most tile manufacturers have these available. While I realize your granite guy said you can lay the pencil flat...only use that as a last resort.

Find a marble trim in a similar or matching finish with a more rounded and finished edge. This means it will not only look great, but it will function well too.
