installing support for a ceiling fan

How do I mount ceiling fan if there's no support?  Our small 3rd bedroom has a ceiling light, but the box isn't rated to support a fan.   What's the process I need to follow?  (My electrical & reno skills are about 3.5 out of 5.)  Thanks!

You use what's called a retrofit or "old work" fan box.  They come in a few different configurations but the one you're probably looking for is designed to span between joists.

Then you need to get the old junction box out of the way.  Depending on how it's attached at to what, you beat it, pry, or cut.  The new fan box will have instructions on how to install it.

Hey BNatalie.

Click here for the fan brace that you will need. It requires no access to the attic and is easy to install. There is also an install video there beside the picture of the product. Give it a look. You can find these items in your local store and online here.
