It will likely be cheaper in terms of materials but it kind of depends on what you plan on using.  A 3/4" sheet of a decent grade plywood can run upwards of $100.  Then you'll need to appropriate tools - cabinet saw, jointer, planer, router and bits, sander(s), clamps, etc.  Then there's finishing.  Unless you have the appropriate equipment, you'll won't be able to apply the durable catalyzed finishes that professionals use.

 I would have to agree with Adam444 on this. I am a pretty good woodworker and possess the tools which he mentions. However, strictly in terms of cost, it is difficult to compete with the economies of scale which manufacturers enjoy, not to mention low cost labor of imported furniture.

 

Custom built furniture or projects have the advantage of exact dimensions and specifications that often cannot be found  in stock pieces. There is also the pride factor. There is nothing more satisfying than producing a beautiful  piece and knowing that YOU did it!
