Hi cmontrose and thank you for joining our How-To Community.

With underlayment I’m assuming you're referring to a felt paper?

I personally always advise to have it removed and replaced. This allows you to inspect - get the clear look on the deck you’re working with and  it eliminates the possibility of leaving the old fasteners behind.

Also to get the full Lifetime warranty on your architectural shingles manufacturer requires you to replace the existing felt with the Shingle Mate synthetic felt and to waterproof the perimeter and valleys with the Ice and Water shield.

Hope this helps and please do not hesitate to post back with any additional questions you may have.’
