Hi bsrx4,

Transplanting can be done during any season, but some times are better than others.

The stress that comes from severing root systems and placing the plant into different soil can be devastating. Transplanting as much of the root system as possible will ease this stress and help the plant to recover faster.

The dormant season of the plant is the best time to transplant. It's like surgery; better done while you are asleep. The plant goes dormant, you transplant it, and it wakes up in a new location with very little stress.

The coldest time of the year is the best time to transplant. This is true for evergreens, as well as deciduous plants. Of course, the ground can't be frozen when transplanting. The fall is the best time in those colder areas.

Dig the receptive hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball of the plant. Add about 30 percent soil amendment to the native soil that was removed and back fill with that amended soil. Water immediately and use a root stimulating fertilizer, like Miracle Gro Quick Start.
