low cost options for making an uninsulated mudroom sized back porch usable as a mudroom

Looking for some low cost ideas to make a mudroom sized uninsulated back porch (original to the house-early 1900), more usable as a mudroom. Will tear down in long term for possible renovations, but hope to use in interim.

Hello bissonem and thank you for joining The Community.  We are glad that you are here. Each of the projects listed below are quick and economical plus they can be moved to another part of the home when you renovate in the future.

For a room that is enclosed and uninsulated, consider first using it as an entryway storage space.  Add a wall cabinet and storage bench for rain boots, winter wear and athletic equipment.  Hook racks can hold coats or book bags (with the homework already done of course!).  Baskets or color-coded cubes can hold each person’s goodies for quick storage and retrieval.

You could also create an indoor workstation for hardware or garden projects.  Both of these tables are easily moved.   Rack units with shelves can hold boxes for projects as well as provide additional storage or work space.

A greenhouse would give you a jump-start on your garden and could be moved outdoors as the weather warms.

Adding a recycling center could help organize and separate paper, plastic and aluminum recyclables.

A baker’s rack can store seldom-used pots, appliances, and bottles of wine (keep an eye on the temperature!).

Since the space is a back porch, be sure to add a safe mat to wipe your shoes.

Best wishes on your project and please keep us posted on your progress.
