Sometimes it has taken years for the oil/grease to accumulate and therefore cleaning it may actually cause the finish to be removed. As long as only the clear finish is effected, then applying a fresh coat of polyurethane will reviltalize the appearance.

My favorite combination to remove oil/grease from cabinet surfaces is with a product called Kurd Kutter and Mineral Spirits.

  • First clean the cabinet with the Krudd Kutter and a soft green scouring pad.
  • Wipe with clean water and let dry.
  • If there is still a residue, then gently wipe with the Mineral Spirits until the sticky feel is gone.
  • At this stage you may want to apply a coat of polyurethane to the clean cabinets to protect them from future damage.
