Welcome to our community EHayes7875!

Oil based paint would be the most ideal for what your doing. It is going to be the most effective at sticking to your varnished woodwork. It would be best if you could lightly sand the surface to make sure it really sticks. If there are a lot of carvings and detail, or if it is a delicate piece, this may not be something you want to do in fear of ruining your artwork. You can use either a brush on or spray paint for this project. Again, if there is a lot of detail work, spraying would be the best option.

I hope this helps you out. Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
