Hello Rv1!

I'm a little confused on if you need to cover circular strips of color, or if you want to make circular strips of color. So, I'm going to cover all the bases! :)

If you are trying to cover strips of color, you can use either exterior paint or solid bodied stain. Stain will last longer and it will be more UV resistant.

If you are trying to make stripes, I would highly recommend using paint. Stain is very thin, and you will have a hard time making stripes with stain because it will run.

In either case, you will want to make sure that the post is clean of any debris, mildew, dirt and tannin. If you are working with brand new wood, you will want to make sure that it is dry. Typically this takes at least a month, unless you are in a particularly dry, hot location.

If you have any more questions, please let us know!

Christine :)
