Hi Yazzers,

There are several tools you can use the most useful is the 6 in 1 painters tool , which functions’ as a paint scraper, chisel for window glazing, a corner and crack cleaner, a nail puller and a convex scraper.

Another option for windows with lots of paint buildup is a 2 ½ inch hand scraper. This tool will remove multiple layers of paint and can be used on many surfaces.

If there is a really heavy build-up of paint, a heat gun can be very effective. Heat guns actually work better on a heavy build-up, rather than on only a thin coat. I don't recommend a propane torch as the danger of starting a house fire is too great. In many towns, it is also illegal.

Caution must also be taken not to direct the heat from a heat gun directly against the window glass itself, as cracking can take place if held there for any amount of time.

A heat gun takes the finish back down to the original wood substrate. Once the surface has cooled, it can then be sanded smooth as new. Of course, on older homes, there is always the possibility of lead paint, so be careful if sanding. Lead or not, it is a good idea to wear a respirator.

Hope this has helped.

Hello yazzers.

One of my favorite tools for this job is a carbide scraper like this one.

These are more expensive than standard steel blade scrapers, but well worth it.

The sturdy carbide edge is very sharp, and will scrape off shavings of wood if you let it.

This makes the process of scraping off old paint very efficient.

They come in a variety of brands and styles, but the carbide blade is the key.

Is this what you are looking for?

Chris.
