is a 4" thick slab enough to support a plywood patio cover using metal brackets and 4x4 supports?

Hey ouija.

Putting a load bearing post on a 4 inch slab is certainly not ideal, as it can crack the foundation, creating structural issues.

Whenever houses are built, thick concrete footers are poured around the perimeter of the house before the foundation is poured. These footers are to support the added weight of the house to prevent cracking. It would act the same way with your project, as these posts should be sunk and concreted into the ground or be sitting on top of thick, sunk concrete support.

State county and regional codes differ from state to state. You would need to check with your county building code department for the parameters.
